Easter Crafting Fun: Make Your Own Chick Nests

We’ve been getting stuck into a little Easter crafting at home, and these chick nests have been such a hit! They’re simple, colourful, and perfect for keeping little hands busy plus they make the sweetest gifts when filled with a few chocolate eggs.

This is the kind of activity we love most: a bit messy, full of creativity, and ending with something your little ones feel really proud of. Working with clay is wonderful for developing fine motor skills, hand strength, and coordination, while the process of shaping, painting, and decorating encourages focus, independence, and creative expression, all through playful, hands-on learning.

What you’ll need:

  • Self-drying clay
  • Rolling pin (or a bottle works just as well!)
  • Round biscuit cutter
  • Children’s paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Apron (to protect little clothes!)
  • Little fluffy chicks
  • Chocolate eggs

A little tip

Let your little ones know from the start that the clay needs to dry overnight before painting, it helps manage expectations and makes the decorating stage even more exciting the next day.

And don’t forget… expect a little mess, that’s all part of the fun!

How we made them

We started by rolling out our self-drying clay and using a round biscuit cutter to create the base shape. Little hands loved pressing and rolling, it’s such a lovely sensory activity to begin with.

Next came the fun part! We rolled small pieces of clay into long, wiggly “snakes, then carefully layered them on top of each other to build up the sides of our nests. It’s a simple, hands-on technique that’s brilliant for developing coordination and hand strength.

Once the nests were shaped, we gently pressed and adjusted them to make sure they felt sturdy, adding little textures and details along the way. There’s no right or wrong here, which makes it perfect for encouraging independence and letting creativity lead the way.

We then left the nests to dry overnight (a great little lesson in patience!).

The next day, it was time to decorate. Out came the paints, and the kids chose bright, happy colours and playful patterns, dots, stripes, swirls, and plenty of imagination.

To finish, we added fluffy chicks and a few chocolate eggs, turning them into the sweetest handmade Easter gifts. 🐣

Why we love this activity

It’s calm, creative, and full of colour, a lovely way to slow down and spend time together. Activities like this give children the space to explore, create at their own pace, and feel a real sense of pride in what they’ve made.

And there’s something extra special about gifting something handmade, little ones absolutely light up when they see the smile on someone’s face when they give it.
